VHS gymnasts place second at Wagner Invitational by Jim Prosser The Tanager gymnastics team placed second in the Wagner invitational on Saturday, Dec. 8, scoring 118 points.
The tournament consisted of eight schools from diverse locations in South Dakota with team total scores determined by the sum of four individual scores in each of four competitive events.
Madison had the highest total of 130.55 for first place; Miller was third; West Central, fourth; Stanley County, fifth; Chamberlain, sixth; Wagner, seventh and Winner, eighth.
The top five all around gymnasts were recognized, where Tanager Sarah Christopherson placed third out of 28 competitors. The number of gymnasts in each event was 48.
We looked very good on beam, but the scoring wasnt as high as our last meet while our routines were better. We only had four gymnasts competing on floor so everyones score had to count, and they performed very well. Our vaulting was solid, but we took two falls on bars, which is an event that we seldom take any falls, said coach Mark Upward. Without the penalties for the falls (1 point), we would have had an excellent chance to break 120 points as a team.
We still arent completely healthy. Katie has sore ribs and a foot, Sarah Gregg has a sore lower back and Amber isnt back to being healthy yet, he said. All in all, it was a great meet for us to see where we stacked up against the rest of the ?A teams and we did very well!
