VHS volleyball team opens season with mixed success Dec. 10 by Jim Prosser Vermillion High School�s new gym complex was the host Monday night, Dec. 10, when the Tanager volleyball team opened its home 2001-02 season with a mixed success in the three A, B and C matches against the visiting Tigers from Harrisburg.
An enthusiastic crowd was in attendance as they watched an exciting three game varsity match which went 15 � 11; 7 � 15; 7 � 15 for a 2 � 1 loss closing out the evening proceedings which was preceded by a junior varsity 14 � 16 ;7 � 15 loss and a freshman team 15 � 1, 15 � 7 victory.
The coach for the C team is assistant Angie Bjorkman who assessed her team performance.
�We�re pleased with the progress we�ve made so far. The team played well for the first match of their season,� she said.
Players cited for their play were: Annie Carlson � 4 aces, and 4 kills; Erin Austin � 2 kills; and Ellen Odson � 8 assists. Kelsie Austin and Melissa Olson also were recognized for their play.
The junior varsity is coached by assistant Angela Golesh. She recognizes the efforts of the following players: Delayna Gale � 4 service points, 6 set assists; Whitney Tolsma � 3 service points, 5 kills; Nikki Nelson � 2 aces; Brittany Sand, and Dani Weydert � 2 kills each.
Head Coach Lenni Billberg has another excellent varsity volleyball team which won its first game, but lost the other two with a respectable showing.
In the Harrisburg match, the Tanagers were led by Karen Sorensen with 8 service points, 1 ace, 8 digs, and 9 kills. Allison Stewart had 7 service points, 2 aces, 9 digs and 2 kills.
Also making major contributions were: Ashley Bjorkman � 9 kills, 2 solo blocks, 2 service points and 9 digs; Meggie Donnelly � 30 assists, 6 digs, 2 kills, 7 service points, 2 aces; and Tessa Tuetken � 1 service point, 1 ace, 7 kills and 9 digs. Whitney Tolsma had 4 digs, 1 assist and 2 service points and Dru Vankley had 4 blocks and 1 kill.
