Nelsen named USD employee of month Commitment, professionalism and a positive attitude have earned Melanie Nelsen of Vermillion the January Career Service Employee of the Month Award at The University of South Dakota.
Nelsen, a secretary at the USD School of Business since 1981, was honored during a ceremony on Jan. 2 in the School of Business Faculty Lounge. USD President James W. Abbott presented Nelsen with a plaque and a check.
"I enjoy the people I work with, both faculty and staff," Nelsen said. "I'm in the Employment Services office. I work more with students now than when I began, lining up interviews, greeting employers that come on campus to interview, and so on. I've had several personal challenges and (the staff) have always bent over backwards to help. I just know that they're there. It's more like family than work."
Nelsen was nominated by 10 School of Business faculty members based on her experience, attention to detail and ability to adapt to technological changes and other computer applications.
"Melanie has been a valued and loyal employee of the School of Business for over 20 years," said Professor Tom Davies, one of the nominators. "She possesses a wide range of skills that enable her to meet the classroom needs of a large group of faculty. Her communication skills and personality allow her to effectively interact with students, faculty, recruiters and others external to the university."
In their nomination letter, faculty members stated, "Melanie's skills go well beyond clerical duties. Her ability to adapt to technological changes has made her indispensable to the School. Melanie's ability to take on additional duties has been very much appreciated by administration, and has allowed the school to provide greater service to our students. What makes Melanie really special and an indispensable asset is her positive and infectious attitude. Melanie is always ready with a smile and a kind word. Her commitment to faculty, students and her job makes Melanie a constant inspiration to us all."
Nelsen joined USD as a secretary in the Government Research Bureau in October 1980. She transferred to the USD School of Business six months later.
