Orioles overpower Tanager freshmen by Jim Prosser In a game that was much closer than the final score indicated, the Vermillion Tanagers were downed by the Lennox Orioles 54-39 in freshman boys� basketball Jan. 14 at home.
The score was even at 21-21 at halftime.
Chad Teigen scored 13 points and stole the ball five times. Matt Preszler contributed nine points, was 5 of 7 from the free throw line, and grabbed three rebounds.
The Tanagers trailed 13-12 after the opening period, the score was 21-21 at halftime, and the Tanagers trailed 43-27 going into the final period.
The loss was aided by the Tanagers committing 23 turnovers.
The Orioles ended up hot from three-point range, canning 4 of 8 from long distance.
�We played a good first half but came apart in the second half,� said Vermillion freshman coach Mark Iverson.
The Vermillion freshmen saw their record fall to 3-2, while Lennox upped its mark to 4-4.
The Vermillion freshmen connected on 16 of 33 from the line. The Tanagers connected on 10 of 26 field goal attempts, while Lennox was 23 of 46 from the field. The Orioles hit 4 of 8 from the line.
The Tanagers had several noteworthy individual efforts in defeat.
�Chad and Chris Teigen both played a hard game,� coach Iverson said. �Jason Donald and Steve Foltz both played a good game, also.�
