Preszler seals 51-50 win over Beresford by Jim Prosser Vermillion�s Matt Preszler sank two free throws with 12 seconds left in the game as the Vermillion Tanagers rallied to squeak past the Beresford Watchdogs 51-50 in freshman boys� basketball Jan. 11 at home.
The Vermillion freshmen had trailed by five at halftime.
�Matt�s key free throws sealed the victory,� said Vermillion freshman coach Mark Iverson of the clinching moment.
Chad Tiegen scored 21 points including two 3-pointers, grabbed three rebounds, made four steals and one assist. Kyle Mollet contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and three steals.
The score was 13-all at the end of the first period, the Tanagers trailed 25-20 after the second quarter, and then led 33-32 going into the final period.
�Our team played well defensively and had good patience offensively,� said coach Iverson. �The free throw line about cost us the game.�
Each team now has a record of 3-1.
The Vermillion freshmen connected on 2 of 4 three-pointers and sank 11 of 19 free throw attempts. The Tanagers sank 19 of 33 from the field, while Beresford was 15 of 36 from the field. Beresford hit 1 of 5 three-pointers and hit 19 of 28 free throw tries.
The close win had several contributors to the cause.
�Chad Teigen and Kyle Mollet both had excellent games,� coach Iverson said.
