Tanagers break into victory column 73-57 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers pulled away in the second half to beat the Bon Homme Cavaliers 73-57 in boys� basketball Jan. 8 at Tyndall.
The Vermillion varsity broke into the victory column for the first time this season and is now 1-4.
The Tanagers� victory was due to a total team effort, including 20 assists on 28 attempts and only eight turnovers.
The Tanagers led 19-8 after the first quarter, led 35-28 at halftime, and then held a lead of 54-42 going into the final period.
The contest was well-played, with the Tanagers committing only eight turnovers and the Cavaliers committing only seven.
�We played well on both sides of the ball,� said Vermillion varsity Coach Jason Huska. �I was pleased with our intensity. We came to play. We out-rebounded them 39 to 22, and that was a key for us. We had seven or eight kids contribute in this game both offensively and defensively. It was a good win for us.�
The Bon Homme season mark fell to 2-4.
The Vermillion varsity made 4 of 12 three-point tries and made 13 of 21 from the line. The Tanagers hit 28 of 57 from the field, while Bon Homme was 20 of 47 from the field. Bon Homme connected on 4 of 15 three-point tries and sank 13 of 22 from the line.
The Vermillion varsity held a 39-22 edge on the boards.
