Vermillion defeats Huskies Jan. 12 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers pulled away in the second half to down the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies 58-47 in varsity boys� basketball Jan. 12 at Dakota Valley at the Dakota Valley Classic tourney.
The Vermillion varsity had led by only two in the third period.
�Elk Point-Jefferson came ready to play and caused us a lot of problems,� said Vermillion varsity coach Jason Huska. �I�m proud of our kids. We hung in there and came away with the win.�
The Vermillion varsity carried the game from long range, making 6 of 17 three pointers to 2 of 9 for Elk Point-Jefferson.
The Tanagers jumped in front 15-13 after the opening period, led 30-28 at halftime, and then led 42-33 after the third period.
The Vermillion varsity improved its season mark to 3-4, while Elk Point-Jefferson fell to 3-6.
The Vermillion varsity made 8 of 10 from the line. The Tanagers made 22 of 45 field goal attempts, while Elk Point-Jefferson was 18 of 51 from the field. The Huskies sank 9 of 11 free throw tries.
