See next week's Plain Talk for a complete report of the game. by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers defeated the Lennox Orioles 60-57 in a knuckle-whitening double overtime thriller in varsity boys� basketball Jan. 17 at home.
The Orioles� Derek Gearman made one of two free throws to tie the game with only one second left on the clock. The score was tied 45-45 after regulation.
�The clock ran out on the play, but the officials ruled the foul occurred with one second left on the clock,� said Vermillion varsity coach Jason Huska.
Nick Olson scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Paul Tims contributed 16 points, and made five assists.
�We out-rebounded Lennox 33-23 and had five more assists than them,� said coach Huska. �We also had fewer turnovers than the Orioles.�
The Tanagers fell behind 12-6 after the opening period, went into the locker room up 23-20 at halftime, and then trailed 36-34 after the third period. The score was tied at 52 after the first overtime.
The Orioles tried to keep things close from three-point range, hitting 8 of 15 from long distance.
�What can I say, these kids play hard and execute,� said coach Huska. �We did what it took to win the game. I�m very proud of our effort!�
In the first overtime, Jon Brooks scored four points, including two of three free throws. Olson scored two, and Jeff Brevik made one of two free throws.
�Lennox missed its final shot in the first overtime,� coach Huska said.
In the second overtime, Olson scored two points, Brooks was 4 for 4 from the free throw line, and Brevik sank both of his shots from the charity stripe, giving the Tanagers a six-point lead with three seconds on the clock.
�Lennox�s Steve Kruse lofted a shot from beyond mid-court and it swished through the basket at the buzzer, leaving Vermillion victorious with a final score of 60-57,� said coach Huska.
The Vermillion varsity improved its record to 5-4, while Lennox dropped to 4-5.
The Vermillion varsity sank 17 of 25 free throw tries. The Tanagers connected on 20 of 41 from the field, while Lennox was 19 of 43 from the field. The Orioles connected on 11 of 16 free throw attempts.
