Vermillion tames Watchdogs in a heated contest Jan. 11 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers rallied to slip by the Beresford Watchdogs 44-41 in boys basketball Jan. 11 at home in a matchup that was close throughout.
The Vermillion varsity had trailed by two at halftime.
This victory was due to another team effort by the Tanagers. Paul Tims scored 14 points, including two 3-pointers. He also grabbed four rebounds, made three assists and stole the ball four times.
Beresford jumped in front 12-11 after the first quarter, and held an edge of 11-10 in the second quarter. The Vermillion varsity had an advantage of 12-8 in the third period to take a lead of 33-31 going into the final period.
�We hung right in there,� said Vermillion varsity coach Jason Huska. �They are a physical team and caused us some problems. I�m really proud of our kids for hanging in there and playing hard. Our free throw shooting needs to improve.�
Vermillion varsity now has a record of 2-4, while Beresford fell to 4-2.
The Vermillion varsity connected on 3 of 10 three-point attempts and connected on 5 of 16 free throw tries. The Tanagers made 18 of 38 from the field, while Beresford was 17 of 36 from the field. Beresford made 2 of 13 three-point tries and made 5 of 7 free throw tries.
The Vermillion varsity held a 31-19 edge on the boards.
The winners needed good efforts from several performers.
�Jeff Brevik scored eight points and grabbed seven rebounds,� coach Huska said.
