Vermillion volleyball team sweeps Panthers by Jim Prosser The VHS volleyball team swept the Dakota Valley Panthers when the met at McCook Lake Monday Jan 7.

The freshman (C team) won their match 15 � 6, 15 � 11 to open the festivities. Coach Angie Bjorkman assigned credit to the following players: Annie Carlson � 5 aces, 4 digs; Melissa Olson � 3 aces, 3 kills, 4 digs; Jackie Thomas � 3 aces, 3 kills, 6 assists; Laura Aga � 4 kills; and Kelsie Austin � 8 digs.

The JV (B team) continued the fun with a two game 15 � 10, 15 � 9 sweep as Coach Angela Golesh cited the following members of the JV squad: Brittany Sand and Morgan Hollingsworth � 4 ace serves each; Delayna Gale � 3 kills; Ellen Odson � 3 assists; Dani Weydert � 1 block. Hollingsworth and Weydert each had 5 digs.

The varsity (A team) finished off the night�s competition with a 8 � 15, 15 � 6, 15 � 8 three game win. Some individual varsity player statistics for the match follow:

Key to abbreviations: A � assists, B � blocks, D � digs, K � kills, SP � service points, PE � passing efficiency ( Key for PE � 3.0 = superior, 2.5 = excellent, 2.0 good, 1.5 acceptable), AE � attack efficiency.

Leading the team with 29 assists, 9 digs, and .50 AE was Meggie Donnelly. Ashley Bjorkman, wih 2.2 PE, scored 3 aces, 16 digs, and 10 kills with .340 AE; Whitney Tolsma (2.4 PE) and Tessaa Tuetken (1.4 PE) each had 10 digs and 4 kills; Allison Stewart (1 PE) scored 3 aces, 11 digs, and 1 kill with 50 percent AE; Tolsma had the most aces � 4; Karen Sorensen (2 PE) registered 6 kills, 3 digs, 1 ace; and Dru VanKley produced 7 kills with a 70 percent attack efficiency.

�After a slow start, the girls found their groove. Dru came in (in her substitute role) and gave her best offensive output of the season, and Ashley continued her tenacious defense and determined offense,� said coach Lennie Billberg.
