VHS volleyball wins EP-J match by Jim Prosser Vermillion has a long history of traditional athletic foes like Lennox, West Central, Canton, and Winner, but in recent years some new friendly competition with area schools like EP-J, Beresford, Alcester/Hudson, and Dakota Valley have become challengers for athletic supremacy.
At the VHS gym last Thursday, Jan. 17 there proved to be a measure of revenge, when previous match results with the visiting Huskies from EP-J were reversed.
The Tanagers won a 2-1 volleyball match in a high scoring 15-11, 14-16, 15-11 exciting three games, bringing the season record for the Tanagers to 13-7-1 while the Huskies are at 9-6-1.
Karen Sorensen lead the offense with 12 service points, 5 aces, 5 kills, and 15 digs. Ashley Bjorkman scored 10 SP, 4 aces, 3 blocks, 15 kills, and 17 digs. Meggie Donnelly had 4 SP, 2 aces and 9 digs; Tessa Tuetken recorded 1 block, 3 assists, 5 SP, 14 D, and 6 K. Whitney Tolsma had 2 blocks, 12 digs and 7 kills while Allison Stewart had 7 SP, 2 aces and 11 digs. Dru VanKley had 3 B, 1 K; Brittany Sand scored 5 SP and 1 D.
The junior varsity didn�t fare as well, losing both games 5-5, 7-15. Nikki Nelson led defensively with 14 digs. Annie Carlson had 2 blocks and 3 kills; Brittany Sand had 3 SP, 1 ace.
elayna Gale led with 4 assists.
The freshmen had opened the night with a 15 � 12, 15 � 12 two game sweep. Ellen Odson had 3 SP, 2 aces, and 10 assists. Jackie Thomas has 5 SP and 8 assists; Erin Austin had 6 SP, 4 kills and 8 digs; Kelsie Austin had 5 SP and 6 digs; Melissa Olson had 7 kills and Brittany Weydert registered 7 digs.
