Canton C-Hawks slip by Vermillion by Jim Prosser Canton�s Kyle Hoffman made two out two free throws to give the C-Hawks the final three point victory with 19 seconds left in the game as the Vermillion Tanagers fell victim to a fourth-quarter rally and were edged in an upset bid against the Canton C-Hawks 40-37 in boys� varsity basketball Jan. 25 at Canton.
The Vermillion varsity had led by one after the third quarter.
�His two 3-point field goals in the fourth quarter set the stage for his final heroics,� said Vermillion varsity coach Jason Huska of the clinching moment.
The Tanagers led 10-9 after the first quarter, led 19-16 after the second quarter, and then led 29-28 after the third quarter.
The contest was well-played, with the Tanagers committing only 7 turnovers and the C-Hawks committing only 8.
�We didn�t shoot the ball very well and we gave up some very easy second chances to them,� said coach Huska. �This will test us to see how we react. I�m confident the kids will work hard and get better.�
The Vermillion varsity saw its record fall to 6-5, while Canton upped its mark to 8-4.
The Vermillion varsity hit 1 of 9 three-point attempts and made 0 of 1 free throw tries. The Tanagers made 18 of 45 field goals, while Canton was 15 of 38 from the field. Canton connected on 3 of 10 three-point attempts and sank 7 of 10 from the line.
