Home team advantage helps Cubs sweep VHS by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanager volleyball team learned �how the other half lives� last Monday night Jan. 21, when they were swept by the Alcester/Hudson Cubs in two matches: B team (12 � 15, 4 � 15); and A team (5 � 15, 15 � 12, 9 � 15), while salvaging a three game victory by the C team (15 � 9, 9 � 15, 15 � 11).

In citing the 4 aces each by Melissa Olson and Jackie Thomas, freshman coach Angie Bjorkman also said, �All of tonight�s games were close. It started out tough, and the girls began to pull together at the end.�

Olson also had 2 blocks and 3 digs; Thomas had 7 set assists; Annie Carlson was credited with 5 kills; Kelsie Austin recorded 4 kills; and Erin Austin had 3 digs and 4 kills.

Volunteer junior varsity coach Christy Schnable recognized Britanny Sand and Nicki Nelson for their service point aces (3 each). Also Morgan Hollingsworth had 3 kills and 7 digs; Dani Weydert and Ellen Odson each scored 2 kills and 2 blocks; while Nelson was credited with 6 digs.

In coach Lenni Billberg�s varsity match, the Tanagers were unable to make up early deficits but the last two games of the match were more competitive. Led by Ashley Bjorkman with 15 kills, 2 blocks, 2 aces, and 17 digs, she was aided by Meggie Donnelly with 2 aces, 11 digs, 1 kill and 24 assists.

Also making major contributions were: Tessa Tuetken � 2 blocks, 1 assist, 3 kills and 17 digs; Whitney Tolsma � 3 kills, and 11 digs; Karen Sorensen � 2 aces, 8 digs, 1 block, and 2 kills. Also, Allison Stewart had 11 digs, 3 kills and an ace; and Dru Vankley had 1 block and a kill. Dani Weydert recorded 2 digs.

The varsity record stands at 15-10-1.
