JV's fourth quarter effort leads to victory by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers pulled away in the last stanza to beat the Alcester-Hudson Cubs 56-42 in boys� basketball Jan. 21 at home. The Tanagers shot an impressive 63 percent from the field in the contest.
The Vermillion JV had led by only three heading into the final quarter.
Adam Brunick scored 17 points, including three 3-pointers, and made two assists. Collin Prosser helped the Tanagers� winning effort with 11 points, five rebounds, two steals and two assists. David Yutrzenka contributed 10 points and five rebounds.
The Tanagers jumped in front 13-9 at the end of the first period, went into the locker room up 23-20 at halftime, and then led 33-30 after the third quarter.
The Tanagers committed only six turnovers in the victory.
�I thought we took care of the ball better tonight and played a good fourth quarter,� said Vermillion JV coach Rex Huska.
The Vermillion JV improved its season mark to 5-4, while Alcester-Hudson fell to 3-6.
The Vermillion JV hit 3 of 9 three-pointers and made 15 of 25 free throw tries. The Tanagers hit 19 of 30 from the field, while Alcester-Hudson was 17 of 37 from the field. Alcester-Hudson connected on 3 of 12 three-point attempts and hit 5 of 9 free throw tries.
Several significant individual efforts contributed to the win.
�We played better as a team in the second half,� coach Huska said. �I thought we shot the ball real well.�
