Miller, Pelkofer tie for first in pole vault

Miller, Pelkofer tie for first in pole vault South Dakota freshman Marci Miller and senior Sandy Pelkofer tied for first in the pole vault (11-9 3/4) to lead a strong performance by the South Dakota men�s and women�s track and field team at the Husky Open, on Friday, Feb. 2, in St. Cloud, MN.

Pelkofer and Miller are both of Rapid City. South Dakota had nine event winners at the meet, including four on the men�s squad. The meet featured teams from North Dakota State, Minnesota State-Mankato, North Dakota, St. Cloud State and Concordia-St. Paul.

Junior Ryan Finley of Omaha, NE was a double winner for the South Dakota men�s team, winning the 200m dash (:21.75), and the 400m dash (:48.99).

Finley�s time in the 400m provisionally qualified him for the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships on March 8-9 in Boston, MA. Senior Tom Green (Hornick, IA) won the 55-meter dash in :6.34, with sophomore Ronnie McDougle (Pompano Beach, FL) second in :6.48. South Dakota took the top three places in the 200m dash with Finley, first (:21.75), McDougle, second (22.25), and junior Pat Belling (Omaha, NE) third in :22.37. Senior John Kehoe (Rapid City) was third in the 400m dash (:50.24), and freshman Wayne Reynolds (Omaha) was third in the 55m hurdles (:7.79).

In the field events, sophomore Derek Pelc (Norfolk, NE) finished first in the high jump event with a career-best and national provisional mark of 6-10 3/4, while junior Paul Brozik (Winner) tied for second with a mark of 6-8 1/4 to also provisionally qualify for the national meet.

Brozik was third in the long jump (22-3/4), and senior Chad Rohde (Watertown) was third in the triple jump (45-8).

For the women�s team, freshman sprinter Amanda Dykstra (Yankton) won the 55m dash in :7.44, while sophomore Courtney Tritle (Winner) won the 500m dash in 1:19.72. Junior Tammy Christensen (Freeman) finished first in the 800m run in 2:19.24.

Sophomore Emily Fox (Sioux Falls) was third in the 200m dash (:26.20), and freshman Missy Tuschen (Salem) was third in the shot put with a national provisional mark of 43-10 3/4.

Sophomore Brianne Vette (Spearfish) finished second in the long jump with a mark of 17-1 3/4, and was fourth in the 55m hurdles in :8.71. In the triple jump, sophomore Jamie Davis (Colton) was third (33-6 3/4).
