Petitions for local races can be circulated Filing deadline to become a candidate is March 8 by David Lias The city of Vermillion and Vermillion School District 13-1 will hold a joint election on April 9.

Nominating petitions for the offices that will become vacant can now be circulated, as of Feb. 8.

Offices becoming vacant for the city of Vermillion are: mayor, alderman Central Ward; two aldermen offices in the Northeast Ward; alderman Northwest Ward; and alderman Southeast Ward.

Incumbents holding those offices are Roger Kozak, Barbara Yelverton, Kevin Annis, Gary Wright, Jack Powell and Jere Chapman.

These are two-year terms, except for the Northeast Ward position held by Annis, which is a one year term.

Petitions are available from the Vermillion City Finance Officer Mike Carlson at City Hall, 25 Center Street. Petitioners must obtain a minimum of 50 signatures of registered voters from within the ward in which they are running.

Petitons must be filed at the same office between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. not later than March 8.

One school board position, with a three year term held by Jim Kinney, will become vacant.

Petitions may be obtained in the office of the school district business manager at 17 Prospect. Petitioners must obtain a minimum of 20 signatures of registered voters from within the school district.

Petitions must be filed at the same office between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. not later than March 8 at 5 p.m., or mailed by registered mail not later than March 8 at 5 p.m.
