Pie Girls win soccer championship The Vermillion Pie Girls soccer team, playing in the Women's Open Division, claimed the title in the Mardi Gras Indoor Tournament last weekend in South Sioux City, NE. The Pie Girls finished the tournament with a perfect record of four wins and no losses.
The Pie Girls opened the tournament with a 2-1 victory over Dordt College. Goal scorers were Hilary Pederson and Kaylee Heesch. Playing the South Sioux Panthers in their second contest, the Pie Girls prevailed by a score of 1-0. The shutout was earned on the strength of fine defensive play by Kaylee Heesch, Jenna Gilkyson, and Jamie Bernard. The Pie Girl goal was scored by Heidi Bauer. Danielle Weydert and Pederson shared goalkeeping duties.
The third victory of the tournament was gained over Sioux City by a margin of 2-1. Goal scorers were Pederson and Tasia Job.
With identical 3-0 tournament records, the Pie Girls faced off with the Morningside College Mustangs for the championship. A hardfought contest resulted in a 1-0 victory for the Pie Girls on a goal by Jill Baxter. Goalkeeper Danielle Weydert made several outstanding saves in the match to keep the Mustangs out of the Pie Girl net.
Heesch, Gilkyson, Bernard, Tara Job, and Mandy Winckler combined to match the speed and determination of the Mustang attack with a relentless defensive effort.
