Polaris team is consolation champ The Vermillion Polaris sixth-grade team claimed the consolation championship at the President's Bowl Basketball Tournament in Sioux Falls this past weekend. Their final round 73-40 victory over Sioux Falls Lacroy was highlighted by a strong box and one defense along with the team's highest offensive production of the season.
Broc Gauer garnered 28 points to lead a complete team scoring effort. The balance of the offense came from Alex Schaack 12, Jordan Boots 10, Daniel Storm 7, Jordan Merrigan 6, Mikal Ustad 4, C.J. Haakinson 4 and Jesse Kirkpatrick 2. The rebound leaders were Haakinson with 10 and Merrigan with 8.
The locals opened the tourney with a 72-73 loss to the eventual champions, the Sioux Falls Power. Polaris then returned to winning form in the second round with a 52-29 victory over the Dakota Kids team. Vermillion is now 14-8 on the season.
