Tanager volleyball team has successful parents' night match by Jim Prosser The VHS varsity volleyball team defeated Bon Homme with a 15-12, 15-5 Parent�s Night win on Thursday, Jan. 24 in the high school gym.
The preliminary matches involved the freshmen girls on the �C� team who lost a close 15-13, 6-15, 11-15 rally three game squeaker.
The C team coach Angie Bjorkman assessed the team�s performance with these remarks: �Overall, the girls� skills have greatly improved, which was our main objective for their first year playing at the high school level.�
Players cited for their play in the B-H match were: Laura Aga with 6 service points, 2 aces, and 4 kills; Erin Austin � 3 ace serves; Kelsie Austin � 4 SP, 32 aces; spiker Melissa Olson with 5 kills. Leading setters were Jackie Thomas and Ellen Odson with 7 and 6 assists, repectively; while Olson and Annie Carlson were credited with 1 solo block each.
The junior varsity is coached by Bjorkman and assistant coach Christy Schnable and they lost to BonHomme 9-15, 8 -15. They recognize the following players for the match: Brittany Sand and Delayna Gale each had 5 service points and 1 ace; Annie Carlson and Dani Weydert � 3 kills each; Morgan Hollingsworth � 9 digs, 1 kill; Sand led the defense with 12 digs and Nikki Nelson had 7; Gale contributed 7 set assists.
Head Coach Lenni Billberg was happy to have a little break from the intense rivalries from recent matches and looked forward to the Mitchell Invitational which was held on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 25-26.
In the Bon Homme match, the Tanagers were led by Ashley Bjorkman who had 10 kills and 10 digs; Allison Stewart had 3 aces and 10 digs and Meggie Donnelly again led the setters with 24 assists.
With the win, the team has the current season 16-10-1 record.
