Tanager wrestlers face powerhouses Yankton and Brandon Valley Feb. 2 by Jim Prosser At the YHS gym on Friday Feb. 2, The Tanager wrestling squad faced Yankton and the Brandon Valley Lynx at the Bucks triangular Feb. 2 at the YHS gym.
With several vacant weight classes and some injuries or illnesses, the Vermillion team was forced to forfeit seven matches in each of the competitive duals. The final scores were predictable as Yankton dominated to a 63-12 result, and Brandon Valley gave up 21 points to finish 63-21.

? 103 � Kyle Hubert continues to improve throughout the season.
? 112 � J.J. LaMie is looking better with each match. He has improved greatly this year by gaining experience in the varsity lineup.
? 119 � Brett Nielsen is another wrestler who is gaining great experience by wrestling on the varsity. Nielsen, too, is improving by eliminating more and more mistakes each time he is on the mat.
? 125 � Andy Hayner continues to wrestle aggressively with a lot of mat movement. Hayner has taken his ability to the next level. He is focused on the regional and the state tournament. Hayner pinned Murphy (BV) in 2:56 and lost to Stukel of Yankton 5-8.
? 189 � Taylor Birgen continues to work hard and improve his technical skills.
? 215 � Brad Simon had an impressive showing on Friday. He went 2-0 on the night. He had a close match against Black (BV), but Simons continued to work for the offensive position. With a reversal late in the third period, Simons defeated Black 11-10. Simons also won by a 12-6 decision over Plautz (Yankton) by putting him on his back late in the third period.
? 275 � Ray O�Connor continues on his undefeated season. O�Connor had a crowd roaring performance against Justin Frick of Yankton. O�Connor scored an escape within seconds of the second period to tie the match. In the last few seconds of the match, O�Connor took Frick down for the win.

These results do not mention that all of our JV wrestlers are seventh- and eighth-graders wrestling more mature and experienced competition. I am extremely proud of these young men and the effort they have given this season. I continue to tell them that this year is a year of character building and your time will come.

Coach Koller and myself were very pleased with out young wrestlers� performance. I enjoyed watching them wrestle others their same age and level. I feel the wrestlers enjoyed themselves and were pleased with their performance. They all wrestled very well.
