Tanagers lose to Gazelles in volleyball by Jim Prosser The Tanager Volleyball team traveled to the Yankton Gazelles Feb. 4 for a triple header match. The results were a downer for the JV and freshman squads who lost both games in their matches.
The varsity team, with 15-11, 3-15 , 8-15 scores, had an exciting three game match while the C team fell 1-15 , 4-15 against the Yankton sophomores and the two game sweep was matched by the junior varsity 3-15, 5-15.
Statistics for the B and A team were not available, but C coach Angie Bjorkman cited
Kelsie Austin for her 3 ace serves and 6 digs; Melissa Olsons solo block; and Erin Austins 6 defensive digs.
Head coach Lenni Billberg has attained an excellent varsity volleyball team season record of 17 wins, 14 losses, and 1 tie, with matches yet to be played against Viborg (Feb. 11) and Beresford (Feb. 14).
The tale of the games was simply passing, she said in her evaluation of the Tanagers play against Yankton. When we passed well we were successful, but unfortunately the Gazelles serves were too much for us. On the bright side, however, our outside hitters Ashley Bjorkman and Karen Sorensen both came back from illness and injury to post strong games.
The Tanagers were led by Bjorkman with 8 service points, 1 ace, 16 digs, 1 block assist, and 7 kills. Meggie Donnelly had 12 assists, 6 digs, 3 kills, 4 blocks (2 solo) and 4 service points. Also making major contributions were Sorensen 1 block, 4 kills, 3 service points, and 6 digs; Tessa Tuetken 9 digs, 4 kills, 1 solo block, 5 service points, and 1 ace and Whitney Tolsma with 6 digs, 2 blocks, 3 kills, 3 service points and 1 ace.
Allison Stewart recorded 3 service points and 6 digs.
As the season nears tournament time, the VHS girls are showing signs of greatness. We hope that all the signs will come together for a complete match, said coach Billberg.
The District 8A Tournament will be held at Elk Point on Monday, Feb. 25 starting at 4:30 p.m.
