Vermillion Redbirds defeat Dakota Valley by Jim Prosser Putting together a praised effort, the Vermillion Redbirds shot down the Dakota Valley 57-39 in boys� eighth-grade basketball Jan. 29 at home. The Redbirds shot 50 percent from the field for the game.
�The eighth grade played a great team game of basketball,� said Vermillion coach Aaron Hatle. �Our posts played a tough inside game and our guards out-hustled Dakota Valley's guards.�
The Redbirds took the lead 13-12 after the first quarter, and margins of 13-4 and 18-11 in the second and third quarters boosted the lead to 44-27 going into the final period.
Vermillion improved its record to 6-4, while Dakota Valley dropped to 9-3.
Vermillion made 2 of 6 three-point tries and sank 9 of 18 from the line. The Redbirds made 23 of 46 field goals, while Dakota Valley was 16 of 40 from the field. Dakota Valley made 0 of 4 three-point tries and hit 7 of 12 free throw tries.
