VHS freshman team routs Panthers 52-23 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers routed the Dakota Valley Panthers 52-23 in freshman boys� basketball Feb. 5 at home. The Tanagers shot 58 percent from the field in the contest.
�Everyone played an outstanding game,� said Vermillion freshmen coach Mark Iverson. �We were able to do anything we wanted to. Hopefully, we will be able to build off of this.�
The Tanagers forced 20 Dakota Valley turnovers to help the victory.
The Tanagers took the lead 12-7 after the first quarter, and margins of 10-6 and 14-4 in the second and third quarters boosted the lead to 36-17 going into the final period.
Vermillion freshmen improved its season mark to 5-4, while Dakota Valley fell to
Vermillion freshmen hit 0 of 2 three-pointers and made 8 of 14 free throw tries. The Tanagers hit 22 of 38 field goals, while Dakota Valley was 5 of 38 from the field. Dakota Valley hit 3 of 8 three-point tries and sank 4 of 7 from the line.
A number of excellent individual efforts highlighted the win.
�Jason Donald and Kyle Mollet did an excellent job controlling the boards,� coach Iverson said.
