Frie, Koupal named to Academic All-NCC Two members of The University of South Dakota women's basketball team have been named to the Academic All-North Central Conference squad, according to an announcement Feb. 21 by the conference office. A third Coyote women's basketball player was named honorable mention Academic All-NCC.
Julia Frie, a junior biology and chemistry major from Byron, MN, was named to the Academic All-NCC squad for the second straight season. Frie has a 4.0 grade point average in biology and chemistry. Mandy Koupal of Wagner, who was named to the team for the first time, has a 3.85 grade point average elementary education. Senior forward Alissa Koronkiewicz, a senior from Peshtigo, WI, has a 3.34 grade point average in biology was named an honorable mention Academic All-NCC selection.
Frie, a 6'0" junior forward, is averaging 9.4 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. Fifth in the NCC in 3-point field goal percentage (34 of 79 for 43 percent), Frie has made 76 of 180 field goals for 42.2 percent; and 39 of 52 free throws for 75 percent. She has scored in double figures 12 times this season.
Koupal, a 6'1" sophomore forward, has scored in double figures all 24 games this season and has 13 games with double figure rebounds. Koupal, who leads the NCC with 13 double doubles, is averaging 29.8 minutes, 20.4 points (second in the NCC) and 9.5 rebounds per game (second in the NCC). She has hit 174 of 353 field goals for 49.3 percent and 17 of 53 for 32.1 percent from the three-point line. Koupal, who is 125 of 158 for 79.1 percent from the free throw line, has scored 20 points 13 times and over 30 points three times. Koupal had a season high of 15 rebounds vs. St. Cloud State on Dec. 7 and North Dakota State on Jan. 12. She scored a career high 35 points in the 74-67 OT win vs. South Dakota State on Dec. 30, 2001. Twice, she has been named NCC Player of the Week. Koupal has scored 490 points which is 6th on the all-time South Dakota scoring chart for a season and her 227 rebounds is the 10th best rebound total for a season at South Dakota.
Koronkiewicz, a 5'10" senior forward, is averaging 1.9 points and 2.5 rebounds per contest. Averaging 15.6 minutes per game, she has made 10 of 29 field goals for 34.5 percent and 26 of 37 free throws for 72.7 percent.
The all-NCC team included five seniors, four juniors and one sophomore.
