Local Coast Guard units receive top honors United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Division 6, which is comprised of flotillas located in Bismarck, ND, Yankton, Sioux City, IA, and a detachment in Vermillion received the Most Outstanding Division of the Year Award for 2001 during Coast Guard District 8, Western Rivers Region annual meeting held recently in Minneapolis, MN.
Division 6 competed against 88 flotillas in 15 divisions from 13 states to win this prestigious award for the year 2000.
The division was honored for excellence in the following mission categories: Post 9-99-01 Port security missions, Marine Safety, Search and Rescue, Search Recovery, Surface Operations, Communications, Disaster Response Unit Readiness, Vessel Safety Checks, Coast Guard Licensing Classes, Search and Rescue Training for State and County Entities, and Boat & Personal Watercraft Public Education.
Division 6 was also presented the Coast Guard Meritorious Team Commendation for its participation in post 9-11-01 Port Security Missions.
The area of responsibility assigned by the United States Coast Guard to Division 6, the third smallest division in the 8th District, Western Rivers Region, includes Lake Sakakawea and Northern Lake Oahe in Bismark, ND, Lewis and Clark Lake in Yankton, and the Missouri River downstream rom Gavins Point Dam in Yankton to Decatur, NE.
