Panthers defeat Tanagers in finals by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers were defeated by the Dakota Valley Panthers 39-29 in varsity boys� basketball March 1 at Yankton in the championship game of the District 8A basketball tournament.
�We played hard but Dakota Valley did a good job,� said Vermillion varsity coach Jason Huska. �We had too many turnovers to make up the difference. I�m proud of these kids. They played hard all year.�
The score was 9-all at the end of the first period, the Tanagers trailed 18-15 after the second quarter, and then trailed 27-23 after the third quarter.
The Vermillion varsity saw its record fall to 11-9, while Dakota Valley upped its mark to 13-8.
The Vermillion varsity hit 3 of 19 three-point attempts and hit 4 of 7 from the line. The Tanagers made 11 of 43 field goals, while Dakota Valley was 16 of 43 from the field. Dakota Valley made 3 of 13 three-point attempts and sank 4 of 9 free throw attempts.
The Vermillion varsity held a 41-25 edge on the boards.
