Polaris team places second The Vermillion Polaris sixth-grade team was defeated in the championship finals of the Attackers Roundball Tournament in Sioux Falls last weekend by the Sioux City Rebels 52-38. The locals could not overcome a 5-point halftime deficit as a hot-shooting Rebels team and foul trouble resulted in the loss.
Alex Schaack led the team with 16 points and five rebounds. Also scoring were Jordan Boots 7, Jordan Merrigan 6, C.J. Haakinson 4, Broc Gauer 3, and Daniel Storm 2.
The opening game Friday night in the O'Gorman gymnasium was tightly contested against Tri-Valley. The final outcome was as 28-25 victory for the Polaris team as Vermillion maintained a narrow lead throughout the game.
Scoring 10 of the team's 15 second half points was Schaack as he finished with 12. The balance of the points was fairly even with Jesse Kirkpatrick 4, Storm 4, Merrigan 3, Gauer 3, and Haakinson 2. The rebounding leaders were Schaack with eight and Gauer with four.
The second contest of the tourney was a relatively easy 27-10 triumph over Sioux Falls Brooks. Vermillion established a tight zone defense early, which held Brooks to only 4 first half points.
Hitting three 3-point shots and finishing with 11 points was Gauer. Haakinson and Kirkpatrick led the team with six rebounds apiece. Other scores were tallied by Haakinson 7, Schaack 43, Storm 2, Merrigan 2 and Kirkpatrick 1.
Polaris' record for the season now stands at 17-10. Their final games will be March 22-23 at the Haas Memorial Tournament in Yankton.
