Tanager varsity survives 1st round of district action by Jim Prosser Nick Olson made a short jump shot at the buzzer with only two seconds left in the game as the Vermillion Tanagers nipped the Alcester-Hudson Cubs 44-42 Feb. 26 at Dakota Valley in the first round of the District 8A boys� basketball tournament.
�The play was set up during a time out with seven seconds left in the game,� said Vermillion varsity coach Jason Huska of the clinching moment.
Nick Olson scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
The Tanagers jumped in front 11-10 after the first quarter, led 22-21 at halftime, and then led 33-28 going into the final period.
�It�s tournament time and we knew going in it was going to be a close one,� said Huska. �Alcester-Hudson played well. We played good enough to win. The kids stayed in there and pulled it out at the end.�
The Vermillion varsity improved its record to 11-8, while Alcester-Hudson dropped to 7-12.
Vermillion will face the Dakota Valley Panthers in the second round of the district tournament 7 p.m. Friday at the Summit Center in Yankton.
The Vermillion varsity made 2 of 12 three-point attempts and hit 8 of 13 from the line. The Tanagers sank 17 of 41 from the field, while Alcester-Hudson was 16 of 46 from the field. Alcester-Hudson sank 2 of 6 three-point tries and hit 8 of 12 free throw tries.
