VAST swimmers clinch six state championships

VAST swimmers clinch six state championships Thirteen swimmers from the Vermillion Area Swim Team qualified to participate in the 2002 South Dakota State Championship Meet held in Sioux Falls on March 1, 2 and 3 with Sara Hamlet coaching. The swimmers were outstanding and managed to clinch the overall percentage trophy. The team ranked seventh of 17 teams in the competition for total points.

The team was also awarded the percentage award, which is given to the team which attains the highest average point score. The team had six state champions. Nicole Veitz also set a meet record in her 100 breast.

The results are as follows:

Girls 8 & under

Abby Safar: first 50 fly, second in 50 free and 100 free, third in 100 IM, fourth in 25 fly, fifth in 50 back, eighth in 25 back.

Boys 9 & 10

Taylor Jensen: ninth 50 breast.

Girls 9 & 10

Katrina Collins: 13th 100 breast; Stacie Kjeldon: 13th 200 free, 17th 100 breast, 20th 50 free, 26th in 100 IM; Karissa Martin: first 50 free, second 50 back, 100 back, 100 fly, 100 IM, third in 50 fly; Bailey Pons: first 100 free, 200 free, 200 free, 200 IM, 100 back, 50 fly, 100 fly, 50 back.

Girls 11 & 12

Erin Rasmussen: seventh 100 fly, 14th 200 free, 16th 50 free.

Boys 13 & 14

Andrew Manning: third in 400 IM, 200 back, 100 back, fifth in 1650 free, 200 IM, seventh in 1000 free; Shawn Veitz: first 100 breast, third in 50 free, fourth 100 free, 100 fly, sixth 200 free; Darren Martin fourth 100 back, sixth 1000 free, seventh 200 free, 100 free, eighth 500 free, ninth in 50 free.

Girls 15 & 16

Melaney Porter: third 200 back, fourth 100 back, sixth 100 fly, eighth 50 free, ninth 200 IM, 10th 200 free, 11th 100 free.

Boys 15 & 16

Justin Manning: first 1650 free, 500 free, 100 free, 1000 free, second 200 free, 200 back, 50 free.

Girls 17 & 18

Nicole Veitz: first 100 breast, 200 breast, 100 free, 200 free, second 50 free, 200 IM, third 200 back.
