VHS volleyball places 8th at Invite by Jim Prosser The Tanager Volleyball team joined in a 16 team invitational tournament at Mitchell Jan. 25-26. The schools were assigned to one of four pools, each consisting of four teams. Pool A (Aberdeen, RC Central, Vermillion and Brandon Valley); pool B (SF Lincoln, Pierre, Philip and RC Stevens); Pool C (SF Washington, Mitchell, Spearfish and Yankton); Pool D (SF O�Gorman, Huron, Sturgis and Parkston).

The Tanagers swamped the BV Lynx in the first match 15-2, 15-6 in Pool A. In match #1, leaders for VHS were: Meggie Donnelly � 13 assists, 1 block and 2 digs; Ashley Bjorkman � 8 kills, 3 blocks, 1 ace and 2 digs; Whitney Tolsma � 3 blocks and 2 kills; Tessa Tuetken � 4 digs, 1 kill, 2 aces, and 2 assists.

Also Karen Sorensen had 1 dig; and Allison Stewart was credited with 2 aces and 1 dig.

�This match was the best we�ve played all year,� said coach Lenni Billberg. �We shut down every phase of BV offerings. If we could play like this every night, there is no telling what we would do!

�In our second match of the tourney, we simply were unable to get anything going. Aberdeen has a very strong team but we never able to meet the challenge,� she said.

Match #2 was a two game affair against Aberdeen and stats were kind of bleak. Donnelly scored the most assists with 7; Sorensen had 1 ace, 6 digs, 3 solo blocks and 4 kills. Bjorkman had 3 kills and 6 digs. Tuetken had 6 kills, 2 blocks, and 3 digs.

Match #3 paired Vermillion with RC Central in Pool A, Philip and the match was another 2 game match as the Tanagers fell 14-16, 5-15. Donnelly had 5 assists, 6 digs, and 1 block; Sorensen had 6 digs and 3 kills; Bjorkman had 4 kills, 1 ace, 1 block and 2 digs. Tuetken recorded 1 ace and 5 digs. Stewart had 2 aces and 1 dig, along with Tolsma � 2 kills, and Dru Vankley � 1 block, 2 kills.

This brought the team to the consolation final against pool D semi loser SF Washington � a three game �screamer� which left the Tanagers in eighth place after losing 15-13, 6-15, 6 -5.

The leader in assists was again Donnelly with 5. She also recorded 2 aces and 4 digs. Bjorkman had 14 digs and 5 kills. Tuetken had 10 digs and also 2 blocks, an ace and 3 kills. Tolsma recorded 1 block, 2 kills and 4 digs; with Stewart having 10 digs and 1 ace.

Sorensen scored an ace and 3 digs; while Dani Weydert was credited with 2 digs.
