Meckling BB team completes 2001-02 season The Meckling eighth-grade boys traveling basketball team, coached by Calvin Hanson, completed its 2001-02 season April 12-13, by participating in the Willie Mac Regional Tournament held in Sioux Falls. The first tournament they competed in was the DakotaDome Junior High Tournament last Dec. 7-8. They placed first in their division, beating Catalyst Solutions of Sioux City 46-14, Hartington, NE 40-32 and Madison 47-35 for the championship.
Their next competition was the Roger Haas tourney in Yankton March 22-23. Plagued by injury and illness, and competing with only five players, they finished in fifth place, losing to Yankton Storm 53-42, but beating Orchard, NE 35-32 and Pro Image, Yankton 47-38. On April 5-6 they traveled to Mitchell for the Rec Tourney, where they finished with sixth place, battling in three close games. In the first round, they fell to Brookings 33-27, but rallied and beat Mitchell in the second round 39-33. Playing for fifth place, the score was 48-48 at the end of regulation, and Meckling fell to Sioux Falls Dakota Hoops 54-52 in overtime.
At the Willie Mac Regional Tournament in held in Sioux Falls, Meckling went up against Madison, who they hadn't played since December. They won 40-27. Next up was a tough Bon Homme team. Meckling made a free throw at the end of regulation to tie the game 30-30.
In a hard-fought one-minute overtime, they lost 32-31. For their final game, finishing in fourth place, they fell to Arlington 54-36.
