Softball team braves strong winds to sweep Wayne State The University of South Dakota softball team's (21-33) pitching staff allowed five hits and struck out 10 batters in a two-game sweep, 3-2, 2-0, over Wayne State (25-23) on Wednesday, April 24 in Vermillion.

Freshman Angela Palma, Omaha, NE, improved her record to 9-16 with the 3-2 win in the first game. Junior pitcher Tiffany Hill, Sioux Falls, went five innings in the second game for her seventh win of the season (7-9).

South Dakota will travel to the Minnesota State, Mankato tournament this weekend (April 27-28) before a doubleheader with Briar Cliff at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30, in Sioux City, IA.

Senior Leanna Chapman, Rapid City, drove in the winning run in the fifth inning with an RBI single to score junior Janice Alswager, Columbus, NE. Earlier in the fifth, South Dakota was trailing, 2-1, when Alswager singled to bring in senior Tiffany Hopkins, Cannon Falls, MN for the Coyotes. South Dakota scored in the first inning on Angela Palma's RBI single, scoring Chapman. Palma picked up the win, allowing no hits and two earned runs with four walks and three

strikeouts. Alswager came in relief in the fifth for the save, allowing three hits and no runs. Chapman was 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored, while Palma was 2-for-3 with one RBI. Sophomore Mollie Witherbee, Omaha, NE, was 1-for-2 with a double.

Junior pitcher Tiffany Hill, Sioux Falls, allowed one hit in five innings to lead South Dakota to the 2-0 shutout. Hill came in the third to relieve Alswager who allowed one hit in six batters. Alswager stole home in the first inning for a South Dakota 1-0 lead. The Coyotes scored again in the fifth when Palma singled to centerfield to score junior Amie Mertens, Ham Lake, MN.

Witherbee was 2-for-3, while Alswager, Palma, MacRunnels and Mertens each had one hit.

Four members of The University of South Dakota track & field team were double event

winners to lead South Dakota to a strong showing at the Coyote Classic which was held April 24 in Elk Point. At the event, South Dakota had 18 event champions.

Sophomore Vinnie Olson , Pierre, won the shot put with a mark of 48'8.5 and the hammer throw with a toss of 122'4.

Olson also was third in the discus with a throw of 145'5. Junior Paul Brozik, Winner, tied with teammate sophomore

Derek Pelc, Norfolk, NE for first place in the high jump event with a mark of 6'6. He also was the winner in the long jump with a mark of 23'1. Sophomore Brianne Vette, Spearfish, won the triple jump with a mark of 38'5.5, and won the long jump with a leap of 17'7.25. Sophomore Jennie Buller, Utica, won the 1,500-meter run in 5:08.36 and the 800-meter run in 2:25.72.

Also for the men's team was freshman Jesse Coy, Hill City, who won the 800-meter run in 2:01.38. Freshman Branden Huber, Huron, won the 1,500-meter run in 4:23.42, as freshman Pat Colleran, Sioux Falls, was second in 4:30.19.

In the 110-meter hurdles, senior Josh Hofer, Freeman, finished first in :14.72, while freshman Jason Briggs, Mitchell, was second (:15.26). Briggs won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:00.05 and Hofer won the 200-meter dash in :22.39. In the men's 3,000-meter run, junior Jacob Christensen, Hill City, won in 9:15.09, while sophomore Dave Johansson, Ghent, MN finished second in 9:23.26. Freshman Sam Pribyl, Webster, was second in the long jump (19'0) behind Brozik, and junior Chad Bell, Alexandria, finished second in the javelin throw with a mark of 154-7.

For the women's squad, senior Mandi Muller, Schuyler, NE, won the hammer throw with a toss of 162-8, and was second in the discus (147'2.) Junior Sarah Hoffman, Mitchell, won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:08.28 and was second in the 100-meter hurdles (:15.09). Sophomore Emily Fox, Sioux Falls, won the 200-meter dash in :24.83, while sophomore Courtney Tritle,Winner, was second in :25.40.

Jefferson native sophomore Laura Schmitz finished second in the 400-meter hurdles (1:10.46). Freshman TiffanyBarber, Chester, was second in the shot put (37'1), while sophomore Susan Chamberlain (Earling, IA was third with a toss of 36'9.

Freshman Kassidi Myrick, Winner, was second in the hammer throw behind Muller with a mark of 154'4, while freshman Monica Miller (Lyons, NE, finished second in the 400-meter dash (1:03.98). Freshman Amanda Dykstra, Yankton, was second in the 100-meter dash (:12.67). Junior Aimee Dunlop, Woodbine, IA, was second in the 1,500-meter run in 5:16.46.

The women's 4X100-meter relay, which featured Fox, freshman Amber Bretschneider, Pierce, NE, freshman Tina Klith, Iowa City, IA, and freshman Amanda Dykstra, Yankton, won the event in :49.68.
