USD Women's Basketball signs Lueke, Bourne South Dakota head women's basketball coach Chad Lavin has announced that two individuals have signed national letters of intent to attend The University of South Dakota and participate in the women's basketball program. The Coyotes plan to sign one more player during this signing period.
Renae Luecke of Sioux Falls Roosevelt High School and Erin Bourne of Bethany Lutheran Junior College, Mankato, MN will play basketball at USD this fall. They join Vanessa Yanez, a 6-0 forward from Wagner, who signed a national letter of intent to attend USD last fall.
Luecke, a 5' 9" guard/forward from Sioux Falls Roosevelt, had a stellar high school career, helping Roosevelt to four straight Class AA Champion-
ships (Roosevelt has won five straight Class AA titles). She was a member of the Roosevelt team that broke the all-time South Dakota consecutive wins record previously held by Wakonda High School (101 straight wins). During Luecke's high school playing career, Roosevelt never lost a game, accumulating a 109-0 mark.
Luecke, who has started every game since the start of her junior season, averaged 13.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 3.0 steals during her senior season. This past fall, she helped lead Roosevelt to a 23-0 record and a Class AA
title. She is the daughter of Charlie and Teresa Luecke.
"Renae is an outstanding shooter who has the ability
to play several positions. She can defend both inside and outside," said Lavin, whose South Dakota women's basketball team went 19-9, including a 12-6 mark and second place in the North Central Conference during the 2001-02 season.
Bourne, a 5' 6" guard, is
a transfer from Bethany Lutheran Junior College, Man-kato, MN, where she helped lead her team to a two-year record of 44-14. Originally of Sauk Rapids, MN, Bourne averaged 16.8 points during her career at Bethany Lutheran.
She made a school record 132 three-point field goals (44 percent), including a school record 90 during her sophomore season when she averaged 18.48 points per game. She also averaged 4.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game during her sophomore year when Bethany Lutheran went 24-5 and was ranked in the preseason top 20 by the WBCA.
While at Bethany Lutheran, she has served as a team captain and she is a two-time Blue Water Classic MVP. This season, she was the team MVP and named MCCC First Team All Division and First Team All Region. A former Minnesota High School All State selection, she participated in the Minnesota All-Star game.
Bethany Lutheran head coach Lyle Jones calls Bourne one of the best basketball players he has ever coached at Bethany Lutheran.
"Erin's leadership, trustworthiness, and character are above reproach. She inspires her teammates to raise both their academic status and athletic play. She brings a focus and an intense attitude that transformed our team from the first day of practice," said Jones.
"Erin combines great penetration skills with the ability
to hit the '3'," said Lavin. "We look forward to having Renae and Erin along with Vanessa (Yanez) join our program. They all are very talented student-athletes and will make solid contributions to the women's basketball program and USD," said Lavin.
