Schafer announces candidacy Donna Schafer Donna Schafer, retired schoolteacher and life-long Clay County resident, has announced her intention to seek the 17th District seat in the South Dakota State House of Representatives.
Schafer and her husband Jerry will be celebrating their 47th anniversary this August, and have five children and 15 grandchildren.
Schafer has always been active as a volunteer in the community, and belongs to several service organizations and educational groups.
"I think my experience as a working mother and a businesswoman, as well as my background as an educator for the last 25 years, have prepared me to serve the people of this area well. Since I was raised on the family farm, I think I have a pretty good idea what the average citizens of Clay and Turner counties, including our farm families, are experiencing, and how important value added opportunities are," Schafer said. "What we need in Pierre are people who understand how our state government is affecting all of our lives, and who care enough to try to make life in South Dakota better in the areas of education, healthcare and economic development."
Schafer said. "I think I have a few talents and a certain measure of common sense that can be brought to bear on these problems.
"As your representative in Pierre, I will work very hard with other elected leaders, and with our South Dakota business community, to create the kind of economic climate that will allow us to leave a prosperous and a free South Dakota for our children and grandchildren to live in," she said.
District 17 includes all of Clay County and about two-thirds of Turner County.
