Tanagers beat Wolverines

Tanagers beat Wolverines Senior pitcher Rob Miller, Rapid City, SD, picked up his eighth win of the season by hurling a seven-hit complete game as South Dakota (22-15, 7-8 in the NCC) defeated North Dakota (16-16, 6-9 in the NCC), 6-3, in North Central Conference baseball at Grand Forks on Sunday afternoon before 100 in attendance at Kraft Memorial Field. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was called due to inclement weather and poor field conditions.

Miller (8-1) allowed just seven hits and three runs (two earned) over seven innings as he recorded his sixth complete game of the season. Miller had three strikeouts and five walks. UND's Jason Schlangen (1-5) picked up the loss. He allowed six runs on 11 hits with six strikeouts.

The Coyotes jumped ahead in the second inning when Nate Dunlap, Northridge, CA, delivered a RBI single to score Todd Dekkers, Hawarden, IA, who had singled earlier in the inning.

South Dakota increased the lead to 4-0 with three runs in the third inning. Dekkers and Chris Gosch, Aberdeen, SD, both had RBI singles and Dekkers scored on a wild pitch.

UND closed the gap to 4-2 with two runs in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Jon Czech and a wild pitch that brought home Travis Koehn. The Coyotes answered the UND charge by scoring twice in the fifth inning when Rob Heisel, Melbourne, FL, had a two-run home run, which is his 10th this season. The Fighting Sioux scored a run in the seventh inning on consecutive doubles by Blair Mileski and Brian DeVillers but then Miller shut the door on the North Dakota hitters.

The Coyotes had three players with two hits, including Dekkers, who scored twice and had a RBI. Dustin Moore, South Sioux City, NE, also had two hits, as did Derek Huxford, Marengo, IA.
