VHS girls' golfers gain superior honors with win at state tourney Members of the Class A South Dakota girls' golf championship team from Vermillion are Coach Kirk Hogen, Jackie Thomas, Dru Vankley, Allison Stewart, Ashley Bjorkman and Karrie Plate. by Jim Prosser The cap-off of the Vermillion girls� golf season was the superior showing by the Tanager participants in the state tournament played at the Madison Country Club course on Monday and Tuesday, May 20-21.
Led by Medalist Allison Stewart and second place finisher Karrie Plate, the Tanagers lapped the field of eight teams with a final score of 372, which was 22 points more then their closest competitor, Winner, to capture the championship trophy.
Over 50 competitors were entered in the new Class A field, created when the first 16 enrollment schools were separated from the next 17 through 32 enrollment group.
Stewart had the lowest score of 81, and Plate scored 89 for second.
The other team members� scores were: Ashley Bjorkman (201), Jackie Thomas (204) and Dru Vankley (209).
Traditionally the top 25 scores are designated �All State� and all the Tanagers except one � Vankley, who missed by one place, were introduced as all-staters.
