VHS girls' track team members Carlson, Nelson and Dunkenson are state qualifiers by Jim Prosser While the Tanager girls� track team was outscored by Madison and Lennox at the Big 8 Conference meet Thursday, May 9, they had some major advances and accomplishments in most events.
The point totals were: #2 � Madison (73); Lennox (60); Vermillion (50). State qualifiers during the competition were: Annie Carlson who set a meet and VHS school record in winning the triple jump covering 35' 3.75''; Nicki Nelson, with a third place 12.8 second time in the 100M dash; and Lindsay Dunkeson, third in the 100M hurdles with a 15.8 sec. time.
Other VHS scorers in field events were: Carlson, Nicole Pederson and Sarah Christopherson, who placed second, third and fourth in the long jump. Pederson and Christopherson also were third and fourth in the triple jump, while while Meggie Donnelly was second in the high jump.
Besides Dunkeson, Carly Bernard placed third in the 100M hurdles. In the 300M hurdles, the threesome of Dunkeson, Bernard, and Brooke Johnson finished second, third and fourth in that order.
The 100M dash, Nicki Nelson was joined by Ali Christensen who placed fifth. Crystal Coakley was second, Carlson, third, and Christensen placed fourth in the 200M; and Penny Decker placed fourth in the 400M dash.
In the 800M run, Brittney Gilkyson came in second and Morgan Brooks was third. The 1600M run found Kati Dehner placing sixth, while Nikki Mollet and Megan Griffith placed fourth and fifth in the 3200M.
In the relays, third place was scored in the 4x100M with members Dunkeson, Christensen, Johnson, and Christopherson; the 4x200M relay team was also third � Nelson, Coakley, Johnson, and Christopherson.
The 4x400M relay came in second (Heather Heine, Dehner, Jeanette Nygaard, and Decker). The 4×800 placed second (Brooks, Kayla Mollet, Dehner, Gilkyson); and the medley relay finished second � Nelson, Pederson, Heine, and Kayla Mollet.
