VHS Tanager baseball team has DH split by Jim Prosser In what was scheduled as a double header at Prentis Park on Sunday, May 12, the Tanagers found themselves involved in a mixed triple header with Winner and Beresford. Winner beat the Watchdogs 6-3, and outplayed Vermillion 10-5.
Then, in a reversal of fortune, Vermillion walked all over Beresford 16-6.
The first game had the Tanagers facing the visiting Warriors in a seven-inning comedy of errors as the starting pitcher and three relievers had to suffer through a mistake-ridden fiasco including 10 errors. Needless to say, the offense was unable to counteract the defense and the line scores showed Vermillion 5 runs, 5 hits, 10 errors, 10 LOB; Winner 10 runs, 7 hits, 2 errors, 8 LOB.
Brett Mockler led the offense with 1-3 batting, driving in two runs; and Kyle Mollet went 2-2, scoring one run. Eric Rickord scored one and had an RBI.
The second game had an exciting home team finish after an early inning 6-2 run disadvantage after three innings became a 16-6 final, courtesy of Beresfords pitching staffs wildness resulting in five walks, two hit batters, a couple fielders choices and even a hit, bringing a 10-run fifth inning, and a couple more runs on three consecutive walks followed by a single in the sixth to complete the game by the 10-run rule.
Starting pitcher Danny Holoch had early control problems giving up five runs in the third inning on three walks, a hit batter, four wild pitches and a hit. Adam Brunick was brought in to relieve Holoch, and it became a winning pitcher shut out for the remainder of the game.
Most of the damage done by the Tanagers came from the 14 walks given up by the Watchdogs.
Leading the VHS varsity offense: Brunick, who was 2-4 batting, scored two runs and had two RBIs. Brett Mockler was 1-3, had one RBI and scored one. Ben Oberle scored twice and had two RBIs in 1-2 batting; Ray OConnor went 1-5 with one run scored and one RBI; others scoring two runs each were B.J. Campbell, Eric Rickord and Andy Ofstehage.
Line scores: VHS 16 runs, 6 hits, 2 errors, 9 LOB; BHS 6 runs, 5 hits, 6 errors, 6 LOB.
The varsity season record ends at 6-5. Regional playoffs started on Tuesday May 14 and will end on May 21. Watch for further information on the state tourney.
