VMS boys participate in invitational at Canton by Jim Prosser The Canton Middle School Track Meet held on Thursday, April 18 involved eight schools: Beresford, Canton, Elk Point/Jefferson, Harrisburg, Lennox, Tri-Valley, Vermillion, and West Central. Team standings were not computed.
The placers for the seventh- grade boys were as follows: In field events: Long jump � Ryan
Gilbertson (fourth), Ryan Powell (sixth), and Paul Hammond (eighth); high jump � Bobby Dykstra (third).
Powell won the 110M hurdles in 19.98 seconds and in the 800M distance run, Ryan Gilbertson placed third and Steven Tims was eighth.
The 4×100 relay team placed second (Ryan Scheidel, Jeff Donnelly, Paul Hammond, and Powell) and the 4×400 relay team came in fifth, I think! (Gilbertson, Matt Mildrum, Hammond, and Donnelly).
VMS eighth-grade placers were: Field events: Shot put � Dan Mollet (fourth); Discus � Ben Rogge (fourth); long jump � Randy Kabambi (first) � meet record 18'8", broke the 28-year-old record by 10 inches, Cody Hays placed second.
In the dashes: 100M � Cody Hays (third); 200M � Rogge (seventh). The long distances: 400M run � Kabambi (second); and 1600M run � Danny Shen (third). The 4x100M relay team placed third (Hays, Tom Pearson, Kyle Hubert, and Kabambi); the 4x200M relay team won the race in 1:50 minutes � Hays, Rogge, Chris Merrigan, and Kabambi.
