VMS girls' track team enjoys success at Canton by Jim Prosser A bright sunny day was appreciated for the Canton Middle School Invite on Thursday, April 18 involving Alcester/Hudson, Beresford, Canton, Elk Point/Jefferson, Harrisburg, Lennox, Tri-Valley, Vermillion, and West Central. While there were no team scores reported, the seventh- and eighth-grade girls� track teams scored some impressive victories.
The placers for the seventh-grade girls were as follows: In field events; Long jump � Ariel Hofman second, Annie Roche third, Alicia McFarland fifth. Annika Sjolie was second and McKinsey Weydert finished third in the 100M hurdles. In the dashes: 100M � Roche placed third, Josephine Kabambi fourth, and Sjolie was sixth; 200M � Hofman first, 29.4 seconds, and Kabambi third. Katarina Gombocz placed fourth in the 800M run.
First place went to the 4×100 relay team � Roche, Kabambi, Weydert, and Hofman � 56.6 seconds, while the 4x200M relay team also claimed first at 2:03.3 (Roche, Sjolie, Weydert, and Hofman).
The eighth-grade girls results were � Field events: Shot put � Michelle Olson fourth; high jump � Heather Walker second; long jump � Carrie Christensen first 14'3", Megan Epping sixth, and Jadee Hofer seventh.
Olson was seventh in the 100M hurdles.
In the dashes: 100M � Brittany Babb won first, Epping placed second, and Amy Mollet was eighth; 200M � Mollet finished in third place; 400M � Walker placed second. Distance runs: 800M run � Walker was third.
The 4×100 relay placed first, 57.9 seconds, with runners Babb, Mollet, Nancy Abbott, and Epping.
The 4x200M relay team also won � 2:04.2 minutes (Babb, Christensen, Mollet, and Epping); and the 4x400M relay team placed fifth (Walker, Maggie Thorne, Patricia Merrigan, and Christensen).
