Hansen cousins' reunion June 15 Saturday, June 15, descendants of the late Hans Peter and Anne (Junker) Hansen gathered for a noon dinner at Arlene's Sunnyside Cafe in Alcester for their yearly reunion. In the afternoon, they went to the social room of the United Church of Christ for a short program, business meeting and a social time.
Judy Nelson led a hymn-sing, and read a portion of Deuteronomy 10. She also read a poem, Norwegian Rivers by Joseph Langeland. Three cousins, Kay Brock, Judy Nelson and Lavonne Simonson, who in by-gone days had sung in a trio, delighted everyone with a trio number.
A cousin, Marlys Henderson, living in Fairbanks, AK, sent a letter that was read by Dorothy Mandsager. Marlys sent pictures and information of the Hansen family, which she had found on the Internet. Kay Brock also brought Hansen family history and pictures which she had found on the Internet, to be shared with all who came.
There was much reminiscing. We younger cousins appreciated Carroll Hansen and his sister, Adele Jackson, telling us about Grandpa and Grandma Hansen.
At the business meeting, money was collected to put the name of Anne (Junker) Hansen on the Wall of Honor at the Danish Immigrant Museum in Elk Horn, IA. Last year, we put the name of Hans Peter Hansen on the Wall of Honor.
The Wall of Honor was established to recognize Danish immigrants with the year of immigration and their place of settlement in the United States. Their stories and family histories are a part of the growing repository of the family History and Genealogy Center at the Danish Immigrant Museum. Today there are nearly 4,000 names immortalized on the wall.
It was suggested that some year we might plan to have our Hansen reunion in Denmark, and perhaps tour the other Scandinavian countries, also. Only a few of the Hansens have visited the place in Denmark from which our ancestors immigrated.
The date for the next Hansen reunion is June 21, 2003. The place is yet to be decided.
The rest of the afternoon was spent visiting, taking pictures, and enjoying coffee hour.
