Post #1 baseball team gains dh split vs DV Post #391 by Jim Prosser In a double header played at Prentis Park in Vermillion on Tuesday, June 11, the first game pitcher Kevin Bleil gave a respectable performance in holding the Dakota Valley (Two Rivers) Post #319 team to five hits while striking out six batters, but the Vermillion team played sloppy committing five errors and DV came up with a 7-3 win.
Line score: Two Rivers 7 runs, 5 hits, 2 errors, 10 LOB; Vermillion 3 runs, 4 hits, 5
errors, 8 LOB. Danny Holoch went 2-3, scoring one run; Eric Rickord was 1-3, one run, one RBI; Andrew Ofstehage scored the other run; and the other RBIs were credited to B.J. Campbell and Max Swanson.
A little team confab and re-evaluation between games brought a new face to the Post #1 team and the field play matched a great hurling demonstration by Holoch who pitched a one hit one run six relief innings gem.
Starting pitcher Drew Law-rence had early control problems and gave up a run in
the first inning, walking four batters, striking out two, but
he then put the first two batters on base with a walk and a hit batsman in the second inning, so Holoch took over. His relief stint included 12 strikeouts (seven in a row during one stretch). He gave up a third inning run without a hit when he found that pitching close inside to the batters might result in a hit batsmen, and it did four of them in the inning!
Line score: Post #1 6 runs, 8 hits, 0 errors, 6 LOB; DV Post #391 two runs, 1 hit, 0 errors, 9 LOB.
The game was tied at 2-2 after 5 1/2 innings when Jeff Gilbertson sparked a scoring uprising with a fence rattling three base hit. He was followed by bases on balls to Rickord and Ray O'Connor to fill the bases. Bleil forced in a run when he was hit by a pitch, and Campbell drove in two with his third double of the game. Lawrence grounded out but drove in the final run. Offensive leader was Campbell who went 3-4, scored twice and had two RBIs; Brett Mockler batted 2-2, one RBI; and Holoch was 1-3, one RBI.
With a 4-6 record the team was scheduled to play a game at Yankton on Wednesday,
June 12 and at Beresford on Sunday, June 16. The next home game was a double header against Free-man on Tuesday, June 18.
