Post #1 baseball team outlasts Irene Post #193 by Jim Prosser In a 10-inning game played at Prentis Park in Vermillion on Tuesday, June 4, pitcher Jason Mellegaard from Irene Post #193 held the home team to three runs on nine hits before turning the pitching chore over to Simon Healy in the 10th inning.
Vermillion Post #1 pitchers were just as stingy as Drew Lawrence was charged with three runs (all unearned) in his five-inning stint, and reliever Dan Holoch kept the opposition scoreless through his five-inning assignment. In a closely contested Legion baseball game, this was a classic pitchers duel as Mellegaard recorded 18 strikeouts and the dual tandem of Lawrence and Holoch totaled 15.
All three Irene scores came as the result of errors, and one of the Vermillion scores was the result of a hit batsman, error, and passed ball. Oh yes the final score was Vermillion 4, Irene 3, as catcher Ray OConnor drove in the winning run in the extra 10th inning.
Line score: Irene 3 runs, 3 hits, 4 errors, 12 LOB; Vermillion 4 runs, 9 hits, 6 errors, 9 LOB.
OConnor went two for five with his RBI; Kyle Mollet was one for five with one RBI; Lawrence drove in a run on one for three batting; Eric Rickord went one for four, scoring one run; Holoch was two for four, scoring once; and the other runs were tallied by Brett Mockler and Jerad Burcham.
With a 2-3 record the team is scheduled to play a two-day round robin tourney at Yankton on Friday and Saturday, June 6-7.
