Post #1 baseball team wins consolation game by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Post #1 team played South Sioux City in the first game of the Yankton Invitational last weekend, June 7-8.
Vermillion�s Dan Holoch pitched another commendable game, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits to suffer a 4-3 loss.
Line scores: SSC � 4 runs, 5 hits, 4 errors, 7 LOB; Post #1 � 3 runs, 4 hits, 3 errors, 4 LOB.
Vermillion fell behind 2-0 after one inning but tied the score in the fourth, then, giving up two unearned runs on two errors and a hit, in the bottom half of the inning.
The leading scorer for Post #1 was Brett Mockler with one for two batting, one run and one RBI. Drew Lawrence and Dan Holoch were both one for three with a run scored while Eric Rickord and Ray O�Connor each drove in a run.
Game #2 was against Omaha O�Bryan whose pitcher A. Petak tossed a three-hit, two-run complete game win over Post #1. Vermillion. Drew Lawrence suffered the loss while giving up 10 first inning scores (only three earned). Kevin Bleil went the rest of the game being charged with four runs on three hits.
Line scores: O�Bryan � 14 runs, 6 hits, 0 errors, 6 LOB; Vermillion � 2 runs, 3 hits, 8 errors, 5 LOB.
Game #3 � against Sioux Valley (Brandon) was an extra inning thriller and win for Post #1 , 9-7.
Drew Lawrence was the starter and was charged with three runs, giving up two hits, five walks, and striking out three. He was relieved by Brett Mockler in the fifth inning with Vermillion ahead 4-3 and he pitched the rest of the game with four runs charged against him, giving up four hits, and although Valley Springs tied the score in the seventh, shut them out in the extra inning to gain the win. The last inning had Kevin Bleil driving in two runs, setting up the final heroics by Mockler.
Line scores: V/S � 7 runs, 7 hits, 5 errors, 14 LOB; Post #1 � 9 runs, 6 hits, 7 errors, 6 LOB.
Lawrence went two for four, scoring three runs, with one RBI; Mockler was one for three, and scored one along with an RBI; Holoch scored one while batting one for two; Eric Rickord went one for three with two RBIs and one run scored; Gilbertson and Campbell each scored a run and Bleil had a hit in four tries but it was that two RBI result that made the difference.
The team had a double header scheduled vs. Dakota Valley at Prentis Park Tuesday, June 11.
