Rapid City National Guard unit prepares for deployment The South Dakota Army National Guard's 155th Engineer Detachment (Utility) based in Rapid City, is preparing for deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Gov. Bill Janklow announced Friday afternoon.
"This is the time America needs to call on its best, and the soldiers of the 155th are some of the best," Janklow said.
Soldiers assigned to the 155th are carpenters, electricians, block layers and plumbers. The detachment is involved in "vertical" construction such as housing units and other buildings that support military forces.
"We are trained, ready and committed to do whatever missions our unit is called to do," said Capt. Joe Carlin," commander of the 155th.
The unit recently returned from a two-week annual training mission in Nicaragua working on schools and medical clinics.
Over the next several weeks, the members of the unit will review personnel records, conduct mission specific training and validate force protection requirements.
