Summer reading program about to begin Summer reading season is right around the corner. South Dakota's reading theme that will be implemented this summer at many public libraries across the state is "Join The Winner's Circle-Read!" The program will focus on activities and books relating to multiculturalism, self-esteem, imagination, friendship and sports.
Research shows that the summer months are a critical time for developing and maintaining children's reading skills and enthusiasm for reading. Children who do not participate in summer reading activities show a marked decline in reading skills and reading enthusiasm when they return to school in the fall.
In an effort to help South Dakota librarians promote and develop summer reading programs for their communities, the South Dakota State Library provides every library holding a summer reading program with a free program planning manual. The manual provides librarians with a wealth of ideas for implementing and creating summer reading programs for youth ages 3-16 years.
