Vermillion Post #1 baseball goes 1-3 in Watertown classic by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Post #1 team played Groton in the first game of the Watertown classic last weekend, June 1-2, facing one of the top �B� Legion teams in South Dakota. Vermillion�s Drew Lawrence pitched a fine game, allowing two runs while striking out eight, walking four, and giving up one hit to register the win.
Line scores: Groton � 2 runs, 1 hit, 4 errors; Vermillion Post #1 � 12 runs, 4 hits, 2 errors.
Vermillion led 2-1 after four innings then, taking advantage of Groton�s pitchers� wildness, scored 10 runs on eight walks and two errors, without the benefit of a hit, in the fifth and final inning.
The leading scorer for Post #1 was Kyle Mollet with three runs. Scoring two runs each were: Brett Mockler and Jeff Gilbertson. The hits were recorded by Adam Brunick, Jared Burcham, B.J. Campbell, and Gilbertson.
Game #2 was against host Watertown whose pitcher Tim Tordorf tossed a one-hit shutout in a three-inning shortened 16-0 loss for Vermillion. Dan Holoch was charged with the loss since he gave up the first six scores in the game.
Line scores: Watertown � 16 runs, 8 hits, 0 errors; Vermillion � 0 runs, 1 hit, 0 errors.
Game #3 � against Britton/Claremont, was an extra-inning, heart-stopping loss for Post #1, 7-6. Drew Lawrence was the starter and was charged with three runs, giving up one hit, four walks, and striking out nine.
He was relieved by B.J. Campbell in the fifth inning and he also had three runs charged against him, giving up one hit, and three walks. Holoch took over in the sixth inning and held the opponents scoreless through the rest of the game until the last half of the final extra inning when he gave up the hit that drove in the winning run.
Line scores: B/C � 7 runs, 3 hits, 4 errors, 9 LOB; Post #1 � 6 runs, 6 hits, 5 errors, 10 LOB.
Mockler went 2-4 scoring two runs with one rbi; Gilbertson had 1-4 batting, scored one and one rbi; Lawrence scored two runs; Mollet was 1-4, scoring once; Ray O�Connor had one RBI on 1-4 batting. The other RBIs were credited to Holoch (two) and Burcham.
Game #4 was played against Lennox and became another extra-inning contest with Vermillion suffering their third loss on the weekend, 13-11.
