Legion baseball team rebounds with win at Canton by Jim Prosser On June 25 the Vermillion Legion Post #1 baseball team overcame a hot, windy Tuesday in Canton as they faced the Canton Legion team in a scheduled nine inning game.
The result was a recovery from defeats as the play brought a victory over Canton. Adam Brunick pitched a three inning opening start allowing three runs on five hits while striking out one batter, walking only three. He was relieved by Kevin Bleil who went the remaining four innings, surrendering only two hits and one run, registering three Ks.
The offense set the tone of the conflict when they scored six runs in the opening inning aided by four hits, two walks and a Canton error. Brunick shut them out for two innings, then was charged with three runs given up by four hits, a BB, and a hit batsman, leaving the bases loaded when he retired the last third inning batter with a strikeout.
Led by Kyle Mollets 5-5 hitting, three runs scored and two RBIs the team built a 10-3 lead after six innings, then rang up six more runs in the seventh, which Canton was unable to match and the 10-run rule ended the game.
Beside Mollets heroics, other contributers on offense were: Jared Burcham, 2-4, two runs, two rbis; Andy Ofstehage, 2- 5, two runs, one rbi; Brett Mockler, 2-5, a home run, three rbis; Drew Lawrence scored twice and drove in one; Eric Rickord, two runs, one rbi; Max Swanson, one run, one rbi.
