Local athletes compete in summer basketball league by Jim Prosser A couple weeks ago you read about a summer basketball clinic conducted at Sioux Falls College. There has also been a regular summer league with games played every Wednesday night at the South Sioux City High school mini-dome. Both varsity and junior varsity games were scheduled during the past two months and culminated in a final tournament to complete the leagues summer season.
There were 10 teams in the varsity section and eight in the JV section. The high school players were coached by non-school athletic volunteers. Games were conducted in two halves of 16 minute continuous running clock.
The Tanager varsity won about half their games played in the league while the JV had a record of better than half won.
The closing tournament had Vermillion Varsity losing to Sioux City North to conclude their season but the JV, winning the first game in the tournament on Wednesday, June 26, advanced to the semi-finals which were scheduled along with the championship finals for Friday, June 28.
In the first game, the Tanager JVs squeaked past South Sioux City JV 28-25. Chad Teigen led the scoring with 10 points. Chris Teigen dished out three assists. Leading rebounders were Matt Preszler and Jeremy Yankton with six each.
In the second game, the Tanagers overcame a three point half-time deficit to win another close contest 30-26 over Sioux City East. Collin Prosser led the rebounding with four, and also was credited with two steals and two assists. Leading scorer was Ben Oberle with eight points, followed by Jason Holoch and Chad Teigen with five each.
On a very hot night, with an hour between the second and third games, Sioux City Heelan dominated the Tanager JVs 37-19 in the championship.
Chad Teigen scored only five points but he led the team as Ben Oberle had four and the duo of Jeremy Yankton and Collin Prosser had three each. Dan Day grabbed four rebounds and Matt Preszler picked off three. Chris Teigen had two assists.
