O'Connor Construction team is 18u fastpitch champion Vermillion O'Connor Construction is the State 18u FastPitch Modified Champions.
O'Connor Construction came into the Junior Olympic FastPitch Modified Tournament with a record of 33-3. In the first game Saturday morning, Vermillion had to play Montrose which they played in he Vermillion Invite. Montrose came out firing with Vermillion being down 5-3 in the fourth inning, but Vermillion came back with a strong fifth and sixth inning scoring nine runs and beating Montrose 12-5.
Megan Kruse and Becky Bak both went 3-4, and Brook Nelson went 2-3. Bak was the winning pitcher with 12 strikeouts.
In the second game, Vermillion took on a team from Clearfield and beat them handily 12-0 in three innings. Whitney Tolsma was 3-3 with two doubles and a single. Tressa Olson went 2-3 with a home run an single. Bak and Chandal Wohlfarht were the winning pitchers combining for six strikeouts and a no-hitter.
In the nightcap game, Vermillion took on Springfield and had 16 hits beating Springfield 13-0. Wohlfarht and Dru Van Kley both went 2-3 and Kruse was 3-4. Vermillion had an inning which they went back to back home runs by Olson, Bak, and Tolsma. Nelson also hit the ball well going 2-3. Bak was the winning pitcher with five strikeouts and pitched a no-hitter with some great defense from Vermillion.
On Sunday, Vermillion had to play a good team from Yankton and had a battle on their hands but came up with the victory with a score of 3-2 in seven innings. Nelson, O'Connor and Bak all went 2-3, and Bak was the winning pitcher with eight strikeouts. Vermillion was now waiting to see who they played in the championship game, Burke or Yankton. Yankton beat Burke 8-0 and now Vermillion had to take on Yankton again in the championship game and needed one win to become state champions.
Vermillion played a very good ball game and beat Yankton 14-5 to become state 18u champions. Wohlfarht, Kruse, Olson and O'Connor all went 2-3. Bak went 3-3 with two singles and a double and was the winning pitcher with some great defense from Vermillion. Van Kley had a nice hit for Vermillion scoring two runs. Carly Bernard and Emily Sanford were the courtesy runners throughout the tournament for the catcher and pitcher. Without those two runners in for the pitcher and catcher they might have went down in the heat. Those two ran the bases well with scoring and stealing most of the time they were on.
Vermillion O'Connor Construction is now 2002 18u Modified FastPitch State Champions with a season record of 38-3 and only losing two players, Olson and Wohlfarht for next year.
